Quinta da Caída

Macedo de Cavaleiros

Function:

Quinta da Caída is made up of a group of buildings on an extensive property that were in a state of ruin or pre-ruin. The rehabilitation of the existing buildings for use as rural tourism involved stabilising them, demolishing unsuitable elements, consolidating them and repairing and/or rebuilding the elements to be maintained, namely their external surroundings.
The work was complex as the aim was to maintain the identity of the buildings while adapting them to fulfil the extensive requirements of a project of this nature. The structure consists of solid concrete slabs supported by the existing walls (when capable) or by embedded metal pillars and new interior masonry alignments. Steel profiles and wooden beams are used for the roofs.
As a complement to this complex, in a more remote location, a building was built from scratch (after demolishing the pre-existing one) to house the caretakers, with the particularity of using a structural thermal masonry support structure that was left exposed.
