Matosinhos
A global project contracted by the Matosinhos City Council that included the construction of a new avenue of around 500 metres, which involved the demolition and replacement/reformulation of the north stand of the Estádio do Mar, the remodelling of the Pavilhão dos Desportos car park, a new viaduct of around 42 metres to cross the A28 and a new roundabout connecting to Rua da Barranha.
The biggest challenges were the consolidation of the avenue layout and the design of the viaduct. Our aim was to reduce the height of the viaduct in order to minimise the impact of the access ramps on the surrounding buildings, which meant that the viaduct’s structure had to be a deck supported by an upper structure.
After several attempts, the design of the viaduct with a trussed metal upper arch structure was the result that best satisfied the City Council’s wishes of having a viaduct that would be a gateway to the city at a reduced cost and the need to have a ‘light’ structure capable of being placed over the A28 with a minimum of constraints on one of the roads with the highest daily road use.
