Function:

The cultural center of Viana do Castelo is a project inserted in the privileged space of the mouth of the Lima marginal, around an axis that is claimed as the new cultural centrality of Minho region. This bold project, with a multipurpose order is intended to be the seat of cultural, musical, sporte and leisure events.

The cultural center is constituted of three floors and contains an implementation area of 3.800m2. At floor -1 is inserted the match arena and the access to the side benches. The level 0 stands for the used glass, which ensures transparency between the city, the river and the interior of the building itself. Finnaly in level 1 are the scenic cabins and administrative spaces.

This building has as particular constrains the fact that is situated at 7,5 meters from the Lima River and about 3,50m below the ground level. The implementation zone was conquered from the Lima River with rockfill embankments and sand. The distance till the bottom rock varies between 6 and 30m.

The elevated floor, supporting a bench gallery and roof, supports on the four corners of the building, winning spans of approximately 40m between the supports, therefore it had to be a metallic structure, which supports great bending and twisting stresses, as a result the sections are tubular shape.

Te solution to build on highly permeable soil was to perform a containment perimeter consisting of 800 get grouting columns till de rock deep, on the riverfront was implemented two wall lines. It was necessary in all cases to resort to intense pumping. The choice of Jet Grouting over secant piled walls was due, among other factores the existence of large stone blocks at the landfill.
