Proença-a-Nova, Portugal
At the top of the Serra das Talhadas, in the municipality of Proença-a-Nova, stands this tower, designed by Álvaro Siza, which has both a forest surveillance function and a tourist function, providing a breathtaking panoramic view of the landscape over Proença-a-Nova and its neighbouring municipalities.
The tower, which is around 16 metres high, was built with metal profiles using mostly bolted connections and was properly braced at its core. The observation platforms on different floors of the tower were built using a lighter structure made of tubular metal profiles, on top of which railing floors were built, allowing for transparent horizontal planes.
Horizontal photovoltaic panels were installed on the roof to supply electricity, minimising the visual impact on the landscape.
